A Few Big Island Events

May 3, 2003
AstroDay in Hilo

The largest event of it's kind in the State of Hawaii. Last year, AstroDay was recipient of the Astronomy Day of the Year award, having the best program in the world and over 12000 visitors. AstroDay was created to educate the public about astronomy and the place where it is conducted: Mauna Kea, and to show people the importance of the research, as well as the importance of Mauna Kea, as a spiritual and cultural resource for the Hawaiian people.

The AstroDay Fair will be held in the Prince Kuhio Plaza in the city of Hilo on the Big Island of Hawaii (the second largest city in the state) on Saturday, May 3rd, 2003. The Big Island is where Mauna Kea is located, home to four of the world's largest optical/infrared telescopes, and arguably the best location for celestial observations on the earth.

The event will have many exhibitors including every telescope on Mauna Kea including WM Keck Observatory, Subaru Telescope and Gemini North. There will be a portable planetarium, IR camera demonstrations, and other interactive displays. AstroDay will also feature exhibits from school students from elementary through high school, including regional and state finalists of the student science fair. Astrophysics professors from the University of Hawaii at Hilo will give presentations, lectures. There will be Hawaiian Cultural representatives teaching about the relationship ancient Hawaiians had with Mauna Kea and navigating the ocean with the stars.
